First edition, first printing of Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin.

Octavo, [12], 301pp, [3]. Orange cloth, title in gilt on spine. Black topstain, faded. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page, no additional printings listed. Solid text block, faint wear to top edge, with light offsetting to front endpapers. Previous ownership inscription and newspaper clipping from 1953, the year of publication.

In the publisher’s dust jacket, $3.50 retail price on front flap, shelf worn, with a touch sunning to spine. Some color loss along edges, flap folds, and front panel. Previous tape residue along edges of recto and verso. Vibrant jacket design by John O’Hara Cosgrave II. A very good example.

James Baldwin (1924-1987) was a prolific writer and activist whose works often explored themes of race, sexuality, and identity in America. Go Tell it on the Mountain was Baldwin’s first published novel, and is often considered his best work.
