Octavo, 312pp, [2]. Blue boards over black cloth spine, title stamped in gilt on spine. Stated “first printing” on copyright page. Solid text block, light foxing to endpapers, top edge dyed blue but with points of discoloration. A few dog-eared pages. In the publisher’s very good dust jacket, $3.95 on front flap, foxing to rear panel and flaps, light toning to spine, short closed tear to top edge of front panel, a very good example. Inscribed by the author: “To Marg + Bob Boyd, with love. Robert Leckie.”
Helmet For My Pillow is an autobiographical look at Private First Class Robert Leckie’s service in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was assigned to the Pacific theater, where he participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign and Battle of Peleliu. This book, along with With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge, was the basis of the HBO miniseries, The Pacific. Robert Leckie died in 2001.
