Signed by Moses Harris, a recipient of the Medal of Honor and the first military superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, this is a memorial tribute to General Philip Henry Sheridan.
Octavo, 84pp. Green cloth, title stamped in gilt on front cover. Silk endpapers, frontispiece portrait. General wear and rubbing to cloth, text block is clean. This copy is signed on the verso of the frontispiece: “Moses Harris. Captain, 1st Cavalry.”
Moses Harris (1837-1927) served in the United States Army during the Civil War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for personal gallantry, after facing down a superior force in Smithfield, Virginia on August 28, 1864, resulting in the “complete rout of the enemy.” After the war, he continued to serve in the military in the 1st US Cavalry. In 1886, Harris was assigned to serve as the first military superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. In 1892, he was promoted to the rank of major and retired the following year. He died in 1927.
