Description

Signed Log of President Truman’s Eleventh Trip to Key West. Illustrated spiral bound covers, xiv, 99pp. Bound at spine with plastic spiral. Housed in archival gray storage box. Dampstain along bottom edge, not affecting text. Inscribed by President Harry Truman on the title page to Yeoman Leander H. Klein, a White House Naval Aide who accompanied the president to Key West. Inscription reads: “Kindest regards to Leander H. Klein. Harry Truman.”

Comments: President Harry Truman visited Key West eleven times during his presidency. With no established vacation home and needing to get away from the pressures of Washington, DC, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz suggested that Truman take over “Quarters A” at the Key West Naval Station. These quarters become known as the Harry S. Truman Little White House. A total of six presidents have visited the house for official and unofficial business, beginning with President Taft in 1912.
