The Memphis Belle, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, was the first heavy bomber to complete 25 combat missions over Europe without losing a crew member during World War II. Piloted by Capt. Robert Morgan, the aircraft and its crew flew from Bassingbourn, England, between November 1942 and May 1943, targeting German military and industrial sites under heavy enemy fire. The Belle’s safe return after its 25th mission led to a highly publicized war bond tour in the United States and numerous documentary films. After retirement, the aircraft was preserved and is now restored and displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
