Sgt. John Robert “Bob” Slaughter (1925-2012) was part of the 116th Regiment called to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day, with Sgt. Slaughter in command of a machine gun squad. His unit would fight through France and into Germany. In retirement, Sgt. Slaughter was an advocate for the National D-Day memorial, which he helped dedicate in 2001 in Bedford, VA.
