This photograph was taken by David Hume Kennerly on November 19, 1985 in Geneva, Switzerland. The Reagan-Gorbachev “Fireside Summit,” held in Geneva on November 19th and 20th, 1985, was the first meeting between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. It marked a significant thaw in Cold War tensions, as the two leaders engaged in candid discussions about arms control, nuclear disarmament, and broader U.S.-Soviet relations. While no major agreements were reached, the summit laid the groundwork for future negotiations and improved personal rapport between the leaders. This summit was followed by the Reykjavík Summit in October 1986, which led to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty of 1987.
