Twelvemo, [viii], 145pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine and front panel. Top edge gilt. First edition with Scribner’s Seal on copyright page. Light wear to tips of spine, solid text block, free of any markings. (Martin/Goehlert 7116) This copy is inscribed by former President Taft on the front free endpaper: “For Edwin R. Hodge, M.D., With cordial good wishes and with common associations with the Elms of Yale. Wm. H. Taft. Washington. May 27th 1926.”

This work by former President of the United States and Yale Law Professor, William H. Taft, is a collection of three lectures given by the author at the University of Virginia in January of 1915. The recipient of this inscribed copy, Dr. Edwin R. Hodge, was a member of the United States Medical Corps. He served in the Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection and World War I, where he achieved the rank of Major.
