Description
First edition of The Rise Of Theodore Roosevelt, inscribed by Edmund Morris, Reagan’s official biographer, to President Ford’s biographer, James M. Cannon.
Octavo, 886pp, [10]. Black cloth, title in gilt on spine. The first edition, with no additional printings noted on the copyright page. Light wear to cloth spine, rubbing at head and heel. Internally fine. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $15.95 on front flap, with “7903” and SBN at bottom of front flap, touch of wear at tips of the spine, a near fine example. This dust jacket makes reference to being “A Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club,” which is found on all first state dust jackets.
This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Jim Cannon – Like the subject of this biography, you’ve written, and you’ve served – here’s hoping you’ll write again. With admiring good wishes / from / Edmund / The White House / March 1987.”
A great association copy.
After the success of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, including the Pulitzer Prize, Edmund Morris was approached by the Reagan family to write the official biography of the Reagan presidency. Beginning in 1987, Morris worked at the White House while researching and writing Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan. The recipient of this copy, James M. Cannon, was the official biographer of President Gerald R. Ford, publishing Time and Chance: Gerald Ford’s Appointment with History in 1994.
