Three Months In The Southern States was first published in Edinburgh by William Blackwood and Sons in 1863. This copy, published in New York in 1864, was the first American edition of the work. The first Confederate edition was published in small quantities in Mobile in 1864 by S.H. Goetzel Publisher. From Eicher: “Fremantle enjoyed the confidence of Confederate officers because of his military reputation… The author’s journey from Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi provides a superb back drop for experience the Southern home front during the spring of 1863.”
