Octavo, 198pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. No additional printings listed. Light rubbing to cloth covers, otherwise fine. In the publisher’s dust jacket, no price listed. Light wear to corners and edges, small chips to spine. Includes a typed review of the book. Inscribed on the front flyleaf “19 December 79 / To General Bernard W. Rogers / Great soldier, human being and friend… of whom much has been asked, and from whom the nation has received a full measure of courage, character and commitment. In recollection of his first visit as SACEUR and CINCEUR to the Army War College, and of long and valued friendship. / Dewitt C. Smith Jr. Major General, US.”

This book is inscribed by Lt. Gen. DeWitt C. Smith Jr, the longest serving commandant of the U.S. Army War College. During World War II, Smith served with the 53rd Armored Infantry Division in Europe, earning a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts. He died in 2005 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery. The recipient of this copy was Gen. Bernard William Rogers (1921-2008), a decorated US Army General who served as the Chief of Staff of the US Army, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander- Europe, and Commander in Chief of United States European Command.
