Signed copy of Triumphant Democracy by Andrew Carnegie.

Octavo, xii, 549pp. Publisher’s blue cloth, title in gilt on spine, illustrated emblem on cover in gilt. Light wear to cloth on front cover, otherwise a bright example. Front hinge crack after copyright page, text block sound. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper: “To Elon H. Hooker, with best wishes of Andrew Carnegie. Feby 28th, 1917.”

Elon H. Hooker (1869 – 1938) was a leading industrialist in the field of chemicals and plastics. In 1905, Hooker founded the Hooker Electrochemical Company in Niagara Falls, NY, which produced chemicals needed in the production of salt. In 1920 he unsuccessfully ran for governor of New York. After Hooker’s death in 1938, the Hooker Chemical Company purchased a development known as Love Canal and used it as a dump site for chemical byproducts. The resulting legal fight with the federal government prompted the creation of the Superfund Law, which provided for the cleanup of contaminated sites in the United States.
