Louis Zamperini (1917-2014) was on Olympic distance runner and American World War II veteran. He survived 47 days at sea after crashing on a search and rescue mission in May 1943, and he endured the remainder of the war in brutal conditions in two Japanese prisoner-of-war camps. Upon returning home in October 1945, he married Cynthia Applewhite and devoted his life to evangelism. Zamperini is the subject of the Academy Award-nominated film Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie and based on this book by Laura Hillenbrand.
