Description

First edition of From Reefer to Rear-Admiral by Benjamin F. Sands, compiled, signed, and published posthumously by his son Francis P.B. Sands.

Octavo, xv, [1], 308pp. Gray cloth, title in gilt on spine and front cover, top edge gilt. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Solid text block, lightly rubbed corners and edges, clean leaves, a near fine example. In publisher’s dust jacket, soiled covers, toning to spine, a few small closed tears to corners, small loss to top edge of spine, a very good example. Signed and dated by “F.P.B. Sands” on front free endpaper.

Rear Admiral Benjamin F. Sands (1811-1883) served in the United States Navy from 1828-1874, commanding the USS Dacotah and USS Fort Jackson in the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron during the Civil War. Francis P.B. Sands, the author’s son, and compiler of this autobiography, also served in the Navy. The Sands family had a long history of military service, including an assistant commissary-general of the Army, another rear admiral in the Navy, and a colonel in the Army.
