Arthur E. Pettit (1897-1988) was a senior partner at the Manhattan law firm of Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts. Stimson joined the law firm in 1891 and became a partner in 1893. The firm bore his name until a merger in 2001. Pettit remained close with Stimson throughout his time in government. This work, My Vacations, is a self-published personal memoir and travelogue. Stimson wrote that “…since the publication of ‘On Active Service in Peace and War,’ several of my younger relatives and friends have suggested that I should record some of the activities and interests of my youth, which were mainly outdoor diversions and which could not properly be included in that book – devoted as it was almost exclusively to official matters.” (Vacations, vi)
