First edition of Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane.

Octavo, [iii], vi, 158pp, [159-170pp advertisements]. Publisher’s cloth, title in gold lettering over black, decorative florets on cover. Library bookplate on front endpaper, previous ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Untrimmed outer edge and mix of capitalization on title page, as called for in first state.

(Williams + Starrett, 8) (BAL 4075) A nice example with some soiling to covers, clean text and solid text block.

Stephen Crane was a prolific American writer during the late 19th century. Most notable for his works in the “realist” tradition, he was an inspiration for writers throughout the 20th century, including Ernest Hemingway. He lived a short life, dying at the age of 29 in 1900.
